I‘m way ahead of you. Using three forgejo instances and patiently waiting for federation. I love forgejo.

I use ionos since 10 years and I‘m very happy, but only for webhosting stuff. The VPS Services I get from Hetzner and I havent really tested them.

I did have a meeting with IONOS this week though about it and I‘m positive about the UI for new vps owners since its quite easy to grasp but I dont think they’re a better option than hetzner.

I‘m currently trying to bring up a rather complicated setup using garage. Garage on Homeserver behind firewall, vpn relay, peertube and other s3 compatible services on a vps. Garage works rather weill, the vpn is giving me a hard time though. Can recommend.

Having as much on one machine as possible has efficiency and maintenance benefits since you have less machines to configure. The drawback is that multiple services can add up peak demands and run the machine oom which you can either solve by leaving extra headroom or make them redundant imo.

Someone with more experience than me might have other ideas to add.

It really doesnt matter much imo. The obvious best choice here would be three copies on three media in three locations. You can also argue for more. It depends on your threat model. If you have an offsite backup that is reachable from the host machine, a ransomware attack can still devastate you. I have therefore made deaddrops for backups so no machine or user has access to all of them.

My general rule with backups is the standard you pretty much hear everywhere: 3-2-1

3 copies of every file you value 2 different media 1 off site

For example, you can have two copies on one drive and a third in the cloud. That way you prevent accidental deletion, bit rot and house fire.

So effectively its not FOSS.

Its not a surprise but it has not really received a lot of attention since people have reported it.

Also signal as a service is not really open source because it is not selfhostable. The server backend is proprietary afaik.

I‘m not sure I understand what you mean. If I wanted to move a section I would cut and paste it. What alternative don’t I know about?

I use nextcloud notes. They are .md and work wonderfully imo. You can either edit them through nc or through the editor on linux (or vs code on windows). Tried obsidian, never got into it and its not open source.

I begin to really like you! Probably the first person I have ever heard say that except myself. The open source community is pretty much the first one that is 100% stakeholder value (the people who use it, make it, more or less).

I figure that should be the same everywhere. No single figure that bankrolls a bunch of people and gets filthy rich while they barely get by.

I have heard of a law or precedent that put CEOs under the reign of the shareholders instead of the company, customer and society.

Do you happen to know what legislation did that change? Maybe that needs to be overturned.

I‘m also migrating from iCloud (to NC among other things) and its been slow to say the least. Things I struggle with:

• setting up photo alternative with face recognition (recognition app is okayish but not as strong as I‘d like)
• getting whatsapp to somehow backup outside of iCloud
• getting my passwords out of iCloud (you need a mac for that) into vaultwarden
• NC being quite slow now that a couple apps and mid 5 digits of photos are in there, will try memcache soonish

For those who don’t know NC, these things are 1/10 of the stuff that NC is actually good at imo.

How is your experience so far?

Okay. Let me rephrase that: why are these the only brands that make printers except niche ones?

Too much competition in a 10 player market? This is an oligopol and likely the reason why there is an entry problem.

What eludes me is that literally nobody except hp, xerox, canon, brother, dell, epson, kyocera, lenovo, lexmark seems to be making decent printers.

I know that the printer business is rough for sales people for some reason (the guy who I learned sales from 18 yrs ago was a printer salesman before becoming a coach). But what I don’t get is that there does not seem to be good money to make for small companies as they are not gaining on the big ones.

Is everything locked by patents or what is the deal here?

Thats how I do it. But I also have physical access so if the vpn fails I don’t get locked out.
