I wonder if multiple IRC clients all agreed at the same time to extend the protocol by rendering markdown in the messages if that would help.
British cryptics feel impenetrable when you first learn about them, but I think in some ways they are actually easier than American style once you learn how they work. Each clue has two parts: the actual definition, and a wordplay or more cryptic explanation of the answer (like an anagram or a pun). The wordplay can be challenging to wrap your head around, but they have the advantage that the clues are self-confirming. Meaning as soon as you get it, you’ll know it’s correct because the answer will work for both the wordplay and for the definition. This is unlike American crosswords where you only know if you’re correct because the crossing entries all match up, which usually means you have to go back and change your answers as you go.
Firstly, sorry about your dad. Are you looking for American style quick crosswords or British style cryptic crosswords?
Also, if your step mom likes Sudoku, has she tried variant Sudoku? If you search “Cracking the Cryptic” in the play/app store, you will find some fun puzzle games for Sudoku lovers who want more challenge.
Should add Reddit. Started out as FOSS, closed down their GitHub, then killed their API which killed dozens of third party integrations impacting hundreds of thousands of users.
I’d be more sympathetic to that mindset if it was anyone other than TC saying this. He’s a smart dude and I have every confidence he could figure out how to use a new piece of software.
Translation:“I refuse to try the thing that people tell me might make my life better. I prefer to rant and complain to random strangers on a public forum rather than accepting that a solution to my problem may exist”
It’s funny, this is not at all his stance when it comes to hardware and appliances. It doesn’t even sound like something he’d say.
I know a lot of people (even people who work in IT) who automatically assume free=shitty. It’s hard to appreciate just how effective and influential FOSS has been as a business model unless you are immersed in the world of software.
He’s a pretty awesome educational YouTuber but this is a dumb take. To be fair, he’s not a programmer or software guy. I believe his background is in engineering.
I have no experience with forgejo but I agree with all of the above in terms of gitea v gitlab
IME it’s way easier to self-host
Would love to see a text chat only option.
It’s not FOSS, but Obsidian operates on a folder of plain markdown files, so it’s at least easy to try.
It’s too bad you can’t downvote posts on this community. It’s almost as though it would be valuable to reduce the visibility of bait posts with eye-catching headlines
Obsidian is my favourite. It’s not FOSS, but it is totally plaintext-based, which is close to just as good.
I was able to import my YouTube account subscriptions. I don’t think it’ll do newpipe though
Protip if you’re going to post to Lemmy from Mastodon: don’t put your hashtags at the top of your post. The first line of text gets converted into the post title. It looks like dogshit currently.
KDE connect is the only similar one I’m aware of. I’m surprised it didn’t work well for you, but I’ve personally never tried it with Mac
Lots of organizations use “Open” because it has positive connotations in people’s minds. They aren’t trying to suggest that they specifically follow the FOSS philosophy.
