I like Joplin, but it is a note taker not an office suite. So kind of depends on what you want.

You can just use LibreOffice. On Android the app I have is Collabora. The server I use is Nextcloud though it could be anything that LibreOffice and Collabora can work with. I think there is also some sort of web version too of LibreOffice, but I’ve never tried it. Maybe called “LibreOffice Online”?

VLC maybe.

Use an alternative ROM. That is what I do now.

I don’t know if this is related, but I can’t use F-Droid on Android 6 since it does not contain the Let’s Encrypt cert without rooting the device, and it seems like F-Droid has stopped using the cross-signed version or maybe it’s Let’s Encrypt itself has stopped cross-signing? This happened a few months ago.

Tables are a great starting point. So is something like alternativeto.net and just go down through the list by popularity until you get to something sane.

There is also going to be disagreements about what is best. There is no best app. We all have unique needs and concerns. I know I disagree with many things Op said in such an absolute way.

More of a rant. Post is kind of nuts. They are talking about a comparison matrix not a check list. How else are you going to compare.

I like Zim. Used it for years. The big advantages you can have many 1000s of pages and it just uses a folder tree not a database, so you have direct and attachment access if you need it. Zim is a true hierarchical wiki not a simple notes app. There a plugins you can enable for more advanced features.

Zim does get slower with more pages for some operations like searches and some changes. I have one wiki with 4500 pages and do feel it is getting a bit slower sometimes. You can however just create another notebook at any time as long as your content has reasonable dividing lines.

Even if you say to keep a local copy, I do not think it is truely an independent local copy unless you actually move it to “Local Folders”. Otherwise it is probably just a local replica.

No expert with IMAP, though I have used Thunderbird for decades, I have just switched to IMAP myself in the past year.

If IMAP, are you sure your local folders are actually local?

Edit: By local I mean in the “Local Folders” tree not under your domain tree where the inbox is.

I think maybe qemu-img can do that depending on vmdk version. There are otherways too. They are all just disk images. One unknown, will the device drivers match well enought.

Is there a reason not to just convert the VMWare image to qcow2 and use that?

Is there anything different about installing OpenFyde compared to say Linux? If not why not just follow a Linux how to?

Presumably one could install regular Google Play Services. One could just use a separate user if they allow that too. Separate phone is really cleaner.

Do they have their own app? If so try that. I know my city bus system has their own app. I think it will work with GrapheneOS, but I guess I’ll have to try someday.

Probably every App/Device is different, but I think you should be able to just install the app on the new device and re-pair. I know the Oxygen monitor I have was fine with that. A counter example, not sure about things like Chomecast… do thay need to be unpaired first if you move them to a new ‘Home’?

The bigger question is do you loose the data? If the data is all in the cloud and you have a user ID and pass, you probably don’t have to move the data yourself. If it’s on your device, then look for a backup/restore option in the App and move the data that way. Some apps have a special transfer procedure too (Signal, Libby, etc). If none of these, you may loose the data if you cannot find another way. For example “Hearing Test” an App I use explicitly prevents moving data unless you pay for the Pro version.

The other way to move apps (which I have no experience with) is App backup/restore as done by Google or through GrapheneOS with Seedvault but these tend to be limited to only same or similar OS/Device. That is App specific too in what the author allows as they have some choices of how they implement it.

By the way. Just curious. What were your issues with GrapheneOS or their team?

One thing I saw that I was not crazy about was moving away from Linux as a major goal. Micro Kernel… sounds like GNU Hurd like idea. Not that against it but why do it?

Regarding DivestOS. Yes, I looked at that. It is the #2 item on the list at privacyguides.org. There is also /e/ which I guess FairPhone uses. Then CaylxOS, LineageOS, and a few others. There was a nice comparison: https://eylenburg.github.io/android_comparison.htm .
