  • I think it’s weird that they insisted all along that K-9 would remain its own branded version of the joint app. Yet according to f-droid, my newly updated K-9 (same app I’ve used for a decade and a half) is now one of two “Thunderbird for beta testers” listed…

It’s still K-9 in my local app menu, the icon is the same, but I guess the Thunderbird project are sort of working out how to manage two differently branded versions of the same app?

  • Yeah, I’m not invested in either online opinion-haver, but have read the occasional tech post by both that made sense… in isolation from their idiosyncratic ickinesses.

I’m sure this “DeVault Report” may have truth to it, I was just turned off by the first, retaliatory paragraphs. Like, “we could’ve let you perv on minors, but then you went after our guy” vibes.

  • Ugh, “grow on social” is such a contradiction in terms, especially when using automation and strategic platforms. Growth as a commercial impetus is never social.

For one thing, no — a brand trying to sell you stuff isn’t your friend, period. For another, this is such a tired 2010s tactic. Please let it lie.

Look, I’m glad there are FLOSS tools for influencers and brands. Let’s make everything FLOSS on principle! What I do react against is turning social platforms into what are essentially advertisement channels.

I personally favour human interaction over nondescript, one-way signaling from (individual or corporate) brands trying to “grow” their presence on social media. But that’s just me.

  • I switched to the fork as soon as I read this news. It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes:

    • Just install it in parallel with the mainline app,
    • export your existing configuration to the default storage location,
    • import it in syncthing-fork (it’ll detect the export file automatically),
    • and you’re done. Uninstall the official app so they don’t compete for the daemon and port.

Perhaps your phone has extra aggressive battery saving settings that kill the background process? The official Syncthing has a setting to run as a persistent service, which always helped me.

Otherwise see if you can make system exceptions for the app to run in the background, and allow it to auto-sync. It’s been a while since I used the forked app, buy it did help me out on a device where the official didn’t work for me.

    Hope this helps.
