Most of the new devices I see are using the hard to find components (DDR5) while refurbished devices from a few years ago have more than enough RAM for school. Also capacity matters more than generation for RAM, assuming we’re talking DDR4 vs DDR5

I wish I learned this sooner, but the best device for school is a generic laptop that you can easily find guides and replacement parts for. That way you can fix things quickly in the middle of a term instead of needing to wait months for the manufacturer to deal with it

The problem with Tor is that, to some, it can seem a bit intimidating. Sure, you can opt to use the Tor Browser, but that only protects your web browsing, so it’s not global protection on your desktop.

There is, however, a simple app you can use to gain global anonymity/encryption for all of your desktop apps that send data packets beyond your LAN. That app is called Carburetor, and it’s only available for Linux.

I’m also curious how good/safe this is + if usage like this is something that the Tor network can handle.

This was a problem in !selfhosted@lemmy.world and they’ve done a good job of dealing with it. You could take a look at that past discussion to see what worked / what didn’t.

IMO there is an organized effort behind some of these new accounts pushing AI projects, and you need to deal with it in some form to stop them from coming

I think in order for this to work, you would need to make it so that the server admins cannot see the contents of the communication. It wouldn’t work with public content

At that point, you might be better off using something like Matrix or a similar encrypted chat option.

If you’re hosting it yourself, you wouldn’t be at the mercy of anyone else. You would get full control over your communication experience, along with any consequences that come along with that.

Generally I’d agree, but I’m suspicious about this one because the original announcement doesn’t have that kind of wording.

It’s FOSS seems to have added marketing speak when reporting on the announcement, and the phrase “It’s not X, it’s Y” is a very common affectation with the current models

I haven’t tried any myself yet, but I’ve heard that watches have a hard time reading the data compared to bands that go around your arm or chest, or even the rings. I don’t think I’d enjoy wearing a ring while sleeping though

I have heard that a dedicated sleep tracking device will work better than the watches, but I don’t have any direct experience there.

That only works for people who are higher up in their field of work, since they can pick and choose who they work for

Most people going for junior/entry level roles don’t have that luxury

A “private” instagram account or story was never actually private, but that distinction is still helpful when recommending alternatives IMO

It’s hard to judge the longevity of a project, and LLMs can make a project look more stable and professional than it is. It’s fair to feel annoyed if you mess up that call and move your workflow to something that gets abandoned.

What kind of info?

If you are scraping the project sites and having an LLM put together guides, they will likely go out of date over time and likely contain vital errors already. It would be much better if you simply direct users to where they can read the current up to date information.

How would this be better or more helpful than selfh.st? It is more reputable and more likely to stick around
