Hah! I wish it was email, so I could ignore it. Instead it’s either a Slack DM, which escalates to a phone call.

If you cannot ignore slack in the evening, weekends, you gotta be bad at your job. If you are good, employer won’t want to replace you and you can condition them to respect boundaries.

“I sent you a message, why didn’t you respond?”

          “I didn’t see it.”

          “What were you doing?”

“Cooking. Food shopping. You know, the essentials to survive”

Not that I’d elaborate. I much prefer the “I had plans/a prior engagement”.

If they ask, “I cannot really discuss this, it’s private”

When I’m off the clock I don’t see work emails or messages. My boss still has my cell number though. This card doesn’t at all say someone is checking their email, just says there is a critical production bug.

I left Monday last week after a crash had occurred in prod. Had happened during the weekend because of a colleague fumbling on the Friday. Noticed it Monday morning. Notified the boss who didn’t care much and left for his afternoon off anyway, trusting me to do what i could. Which I did. Stabilised the bleeding, explained others what they had done and what to do, how to mitigate, how to temporise till I was back, then fucked off at 5pm sharp, for one of the best romantic weeks in years. Not a one phone call or message. I had even taken my laptop just in case they were really stuck. Nothing.

Vive la France 🇫🇷 is what I’m saying.

sounds less to do with the country and more to do with the work culture of your team to me. I wish we were all this lucky lol

There is a correlation between the country’s culture and the work culture of a team.

And the work culture of this team definitively is the French work culture.

If I’m not being explicitly paid to be on call, I’m not ever even having notifications come through to my phone from anything work-related.
