Yep, programming is fun but working as a programmer not so much. For me writing software is a creative activity. It’s fun to come up with problems and find solutions for them. In my personal projects I decide what problem I want to solve, choose the technology I think will be fun to solve it in and then come up with a solution I like.

At work you are usually handed a problem you don’t care about (we’re decommissioning X, you don’t have to know why, just change everything to use Y), the solution is described in detail by someone else and you just have to turn it into some code using 5-10 years old stack.

Fortunately at my current job I mostly do projects without much technical oversight (proof-of-concept type project) so I can choose how I want to do then. I dislike the company culture but I know that moving somewhere else would mean going back to boring coding agian.

What you said (if I understand you correctly, you didn’t give any examples) boils down to breaking standards established by the current browsers. The standards that web developers and servers universally follow. If you want to build browser that will not follow standards you might just as well render HTML in non-standars ways. Most pages will not work anyway.

What is it about then? Rendering HTML and CSS in a new, fun way?

Ok, so what do you want your 4th, new browser to do differently? What’s so different about it that you can’t build it on top of Gecko?

No it’s not. You have lots and lots of different browsers. Do we need another browser engine? Also not. They all do the same thing so while it’s good to have some competition we definitely don’t need yet another one.

Yeah, I had the same issue. Sometimes it was the SD card, sometimes the network interface (not your case obviously), sometimes things connected to USB, sometimes it was running hot… I gave up and now I just run everything on an older Slimbook Zero. Yes, power consumption is higher (still pretty low) but so is stability.

In my experience it’s pretty bad. Buggy, poor support (as in responding to bug reports), hard to test, very verbose components library. Not a great experience over all. I would try react native for my next project but looks like Tauri will be getting Android support soon so I will try this first.

For virtualization.

OMG, it’s so trivial. What you do is when T2 happens you send an atomic clock back in time to T1 and start counting till T2 happens again. If T1 and T2 happen in different locations you send two entangled clocks and collapse the state on T2 clock when the event happens measuring the exact moment on T1. How is this an issue?

I’m thinking about moving to Korea. Not forever but for a year or two. Learn the language, get to know the culture, disconnect for a bit and come back to EU. How’s the IT job market there? Is it doable?

In my experience LSP actually consumes quite a bit of resources. I’m using nvim with LSP and it’s definitely not tiny percentage of what other IDEs are using. The editor is light, LSP is not.

Yeah, UI is hard. I try to use good component librarian as much as possible but actually making it look consistent is difficult.

For the UI I’m using leptos. It’s actually very nice and using rust on both front and back means there’s couple less things to worry about.

What are you using from UI? JS or also Rust?

I think parsing code and all the dependencies will require way more than 120MB of RAM so for VS Code the overhead doesn’t matter that much. For smaller apps 120MB of ram is insane.

I though the same but I tried Tauri and it makes sense. Unlike electron you’re not shipping the entire browser with your app and the the low level stuff is just rust so the integration is nice and easy. And using webview for UI? Why not? The reactive libraries are actually nice to work with, it’s easy to customize, you have all the tools to inspect/debug your code. It’s definitely better then trying to fit GTK into rust.

I tried Flutter and hated it. It was buggy (there’s thousands of post on the internet saying that you have to do ‘rm ios/Podfile && flutter build ios’ and similar. the build breaks often and standard solution is ‘turn it off and on again’), the components library is too verbose and not nice to work with, the support was bad (as in open a bug report with example repo and they would react after 6 months) and everything that’s not ‘hello world’ was complicated or impossible (like writing tests). I’m definitely not using it again.
