I think a great test is grab a 5 year old budget phone with low screen resolution and slow CPU, and hand it to a few people with your app on it for a few minutes. See what they complain about or can’t figure out.

Restic is a good backup tool with encryption. Cryptomator is awesome but it doesn’t do backups, just storage.
How are you handling versioning and deleted files?
It seems like Restic would be a better option? It only backs up changed files and handles versioning, encryption, deduplication, and some fault recovery allready. You wouldn’t need all of the other layers like the export script and float.

Yes generally around 1TB on cheap plans. That’s a ton of data though for streaming media, if youre moving more than that getting a higher tier VPS would make sense.

It costs a little but a VPS running Pangolin and Crowdsec is a decent replacement for cloudflare for hiding your IP and having some extra protection.

Most VPS are on 1Gbps connections, but even if it only has 100Mbps that’s plenty.

Just a reverse proxy, I was using Caddy, moved to Pangolin because it’s neat.

It supports DDR4 if you buy a motherboard that supports DDR4 too.

I would probably go Intel with iGPU for the transcoding and acceleration for Immich. i3-14100 is fast and cheap.
Otherwise you definitely have far more CPU power than you’ll need for those apps so no worries there.

Have you checked while it’s running all the ML tasks on import? Mine uses a good chunk of RAM while that’s running.

Delta chat seems pretty good, you can easily self host and it’s very lightweight.
I do not recommend matrix, the apps aren’t great, and hosting is a lot to deal with.
It sounds like the app requires some manual intervention to start/stop tracking, is there a way to make it work like google location history where it’s always fully automatic and in the background without extra battery drain?
Some of the other apps I’ve tried before for my traccar instance had a lot of battery drain or would randomly stop working in the background, I don’t remember which ones I tried as it was awhile ago.
Its just called a matrix server, you don’t need to tell anyone the specific kind.

Yes mirrors are the fastest to rebuild I believe, it’s also to give you a backup, as any kind of raid or mirror is not a functional backup, it only provides redundancy.
I would not do raid 10 for the same reason of no backup that way.

What about 2 mirrored pools of 2 drives each, then back up the main pool to the other with either ZFS snapshots or a tool like Restic.
Ideally you also need an offsite backup of important files too, but that gets you part way to a robust system that can handle corruption or accidental deletions.
Mini PCs are even less usually, mine are around 2W idle which is less than my Pi! (i3-7100u CPUs)
Newer hardware that has lower idle consumption mostly. I’ve found there’s not much to do on a typical setup as far as software optimization, as most OS’s are already set up for pretty low power usage while idle.
HDD sleep can work if you don’t have anything accessing the drives, but with all the stuff running on my server there’s basically always some kind of activity going on so they never sleep. Less HDDs is the answer for me, I just have 2 large drives in a ZFS mirror.
My HP box with an i5-7500 idles around 15-20W which is decently low, but I also have 2 PCs with i3-7100u mobile chips that idle at 1-2W with 32GB of RAM and an NVMe SSD, which is wild.
Avoiding enterprise gear is key, it’s extremely power hungry.
I have a single container for docker that runs 95% of services, and a few other containers and VMs for things that aren’t docker, or are windows/osx.
ext4 is the simple easy option, I tend to pick that on systems with lower amounts of RAM since ZFS does need some RAM for itself.
I do have an external USB HDD for backups to be stored on.

OP is using a VPS, not a phone/laptop.
It’s pretty decent! Huge learning curve coming from Fusion360 since it does everything so differently, but once I got the basics down I can do simple models at least.
