I have bought a few otherwise hard to find books on Amazon. Actual paper books. At least used to be possible.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Handbrake local vs docker on Synology DS920+: same settings, very different results?English
7·5 months agoIf all the settings and versions match, my first suspicion would be that there’s some library available on one system that gets used but not the other. Have you taken very verbose logs to see if there’s differences that stand out?
Beware that you won’t have ECC, so corruption is much more likely than with proper hardware.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Is there any proprietary Android app for which you wish there would be an open-source alternative?
8·1 year agoI’ll mention organic maps and rimusic.
It could work better because a web browser is the most bloated useless bug ridden insecure creeping horror ever invented.
Although I suspect this is just a web browser with some extra chrome.

I once had a hard drive of some particular vintage that wasn’t able to start. I did actually get it running with a hammer tap. Got the remains of data out and replaced the drive. It was nothing special, a Unix system drive with nothing that wasn’t on tape, but I just had to see if I could fix a hard drive with a hammer.
I also remember one admin who would often be seen walking between computer maintenance room and workshop wing with drives and a blacksmiths hammer labelled “format”.

Yousician or similar entertaining musician motivator. One that has scoring or analysis, specifically. Not just a video/backing track player.
Some kind of buy/sell/auction/freecycle system service/app/front-end that isn’t evil and it’s simple enough for normos to use so it gets critical mass and makes it easy to buy/sell/give/recycle stuff locally.
GitHub is evil, but yes. If that’s where they have a bug tracker, that would probably be the preferred place for suggestions. Also you can browse other tickets. There should be a tab saying “issues” or something like that. Posting will need an account, almost certainly.
You could try posting or sending in a feature request.
I finally moved to neovim some time ago. I usually find frontends and plugins to be more trouble than they’re worth, but I should probably have a look at that. If it ever ends up in Debian, that is.
Or you could set your companion on fire. One of those might be a more ethically sound choice.
Didn’t Jolla have an android compatibility thing of some sort?

Open Source@lemmy.ml•I'm amazed at FreeCAD's abilities. It needs a better name. Thinking of it as simply "cad software" like calling a 2-GHz computer in your pocket a "phone".
2·2 years agoEven Freecad is well over a decade old. Opencascade is over 20.
