I don’t know. both? probably? I tried a couple of things here and there. it was plain that bringing in docker would add a layer of obfuscation to my system that I am not equipped to deal with. So I rinsed it from my mind.

If you think it’s likely that I followed some “how to get started with docker” tutorial that had completely wrong information in it, that just demonstrates the point I am making.

Every time I have tried it just introduces a layer of complexity I can’t tolerate. I have struggled to learn everything required to run a simple Debian server. I don’t care what anyone says, docker is not simpler or easier. Maybe it is when everything runs perfectly but they never do so you have to consider the eventual difficulty of troubleshooting. And that would be made all the more cumbersome if I do not yet understand the fundamentals of Linux system.

However I do keep a list of packages I want to use that are docker-only. So if one day I feel up to it I’ll be ready to go.

I’m sure a lot (the majority) of people who are interested in selfhosting block ads. Need a different business model.

It gets me riled up because every email list does it. Even when I know that the people who run it have no interest in it. Non-profit, non-creepy organizations have it turned on by default. They may not even be aware of it.

It turns me off the whole concept of email lists because I have to be on guard to not click any of their links by mistake.

Well it looks like just what I wanted! I’ll put it on my “when I get comfortable with Docker” list. Which due to it’s rapid growth, is becoming a “reasons to get comfortable with docker” list.

Looks pretty new, since June or July this year. I will admit I am suspicious of projects making claims like “Learning curve ✅ None”. I find they tend to assume a lot of prior knoweldge. I will check it out in a while, I think.

In a physical archive, effort is made to retain as much original relation between the materials as possible. The order of books on a shelf, items placed inside other items, etc. If there is an envelope containing a bunch of press clippings, notes, photos etc, you don’t disassemble it to be filed by date and type, completely apart from each other. You keep them together, in order.

in theory if you wanted to you could use hardlinks to retain the original file structure while also having a nicely organized version available. most of the Arrs support this although TBH I do not trust them with the files I wish to preserve in this way. Since there’s not too many of them I just zip up copies of anything I want to retain exactly and let the software work with a duplicate. And hardlinks of course would still be subject to editing like retagging.

Of course if you are accustomed to your library being organized in this manner and it suits you, then there is no reason to change. :)

I tried beets but it takes so long to do any task. Even if I just ask it to look up 1 album. beet import /path/to/album I got frustrated trying to learn it.

Was surprised about being unable to find any --verbose argument so I could at least see what was going on. Does it just take forever to do anything?

remember that audiobooks are relatively rare due to their high production costs. so a lot of books do not have an audio version. Could consider text to speech.

there are some massive torrents that have like thousands of audiobooks in them and you have to go and select which ones to download. I’m not sure how I stumbled on these in the past so if you figure that out let me know.

Readarr is just a tool that facilitates downloading via bittorrent or usenet. You can just use those the old fashioned way without it.

Edit: The program Lazy Librarian that some people are mentioning also assists with the searching and downloading, if you prefer not to do it by hand.

You can purchase audiobooks too, especially from authors who make them available on DRM-free platforms.

I used LL years ago before I got into any of the arrs. I was planning to return to it but ran into some sort of install/dependency issues. Maybe I’ll give it another whirl in case they’ve solved spontaneously.

I’m actually using Audiobookshelf as my main server. I just wanted Readarr to get metadata and organize the folders. Do you have any workflow tips for that?

OK, well that works enough to access the specified port and loads the webapp. So that’s cool. :) There’s a tcp error printed in the page itself but ?maybe? that is caused by improperly running it.

It could well be some self imposed error. But I’m always gonna be making those. If it is, it happened because I was trying to solve some other rudimentary issue. I’ve never gotten anything functional with this so it’s not like I was trying to do something fancy and got in over my head.

Part of the issue with docker in this attempt and other times is it doesn’t give good enough errors/output to diagnose. It’s really kind of you to help me here but I can’t call you every step. The documentation is too focused on making things look simple even when they’re not, and therefor glossing over whatever system weirdies are getting in the way. You identified a user issue and even I suspected it (that’s why I tried all those commands with and without sudo in the above comment). Yet it is not in the official documentation as a potential cause of said error. And now that I have confirmed it, I have no idea how to solve it. I see in my browser history I’ve previously looked up “rootless mode”. Maybe that’s how I screwed this up in the first place.

Moral of the story is, docker becomes a mess immediately. :D

Nevertheless I am in the mood to be wrong and pleasantly surprised so I follow your instructions. (Spoiler: It doesn’t work. But I am not trying to request further help about this, because I am fairly resigned to the situation. I am just showing you, that I tried.)

I already had docker and docker-compose installed; I was already in the docker group; and the service was already active per systemctl. I guess from last time I tried this (not too long ago). Create directory, file etc.

$ docker compose up

So I find Troubleshooting the Docker daemon | Docker Docs. It has several methods to find out if docker is even running which now I am confused about.

reports as inactive: # systemctl is-active docker, # systemctl status docker.service, $ docker info

report as active: $ systemctl status docker.service, # systemctl is-active docker,
$ systemctl is-active docker, # docker info

$ env | grep DOCKER_HOST and # env | grep DOCKER_HOST have no output.

ps aux | grep docker and top | grep docker tell me dockerd is running by root. So I think maybe I need to start it as a regular user for this exercise?

Found Start the daemon | Docker Docs which advises the use of dockerd either with or without sudo depending on environment.

So it is running? 3952 was pid reported by top and ps. It is running. But it’s not running.

Who knows… honestly this is how it goes every time. Maybe I am running services wrong… maybe I set something up last time because I was trying to solve another problem and it was suggested and that thing is now causing me am issue. I could chase my tail on this all week.

Like I said I completely believe everyone that once you’re rolling with it, it’s great. I’m happy for everyone who is able to access this. I will continue to live without it for the time being.
