I’m one of those weirdos that likes to live on the bleeding edge and get anxiety when apps aren’t updated to target the latest API. You know how the media tries to tell you about EV drivers getting battery anxiety, I have that but for apps being abandoned.

Anyway… I was going through App Checker this morning to see what I should be on the look out for replacements for and happened to see SoundHound hadn’t been updated to target Android 14. Should that be a problem? No. But SoundHound hasn’t been very good at doing its job for a while now either, so I thought frig it and double clicked the mouse. I didn’t, I was on my phone, but the joke! 🫣

Anyway, two apps came up that met my criteria. Which surprised me because every time I checked before, I got the same list of music players. Anyway I completely forgot about them until a few minutes ago 😂 but soon as I remembered, I put them through their paces like a divorced army instructor.

That said, only one could emerge champion and that is Audire. It’s quick and managed to find everything, even really obscure stuff. Whereas the runner up, Audile, kept reporting connection problems.

Audire only have links to Spotify and YouTube, but that’s better than Shazam which only have links to Apple Music now. Audile has links to a bunch more, but that’s no good if you can’t even pull up search results. That said, Audire let’s you Google search too. Oh and bonus, it shows the lyrics.

Anyway, both are available on IzzyOnDroid/F-Droid. Link to the one I’m recommending is included in post.

Interesting, but sadly Audire uses non-free API for the recognition (Shazam and AUDD).

I don’t know how feasible it would be to create an open platform to store audio fingerprints for recognition, and even better if it could be downloaded and used locally for more privacy. From what I remember when I explored this some time ago, AcoustID isn’t a good candidate for live recognition like Shazam and SoundHound does.
