We probably don’t use it for the same work. But I can do way way more work using other software than dancing around the interface clicking a bizzillion buttons before achieving anything. I need realtime dynamic editing and FreeCAD can’t do that.

Freecad is a real no go. Tried it and forced to do something with it. The amount of bugs. And really basic bugs makes using it for professional work a non starter. It basically is a collection of amateur software stitched together with no single part having reached maturity.
Freecad was built on top of a giant library called opencascade. Which is in part the reason why we can’t have dynamic or real time modeling. Everything takes triple the interactions to make than in its commercial counterparts.
Add to that the lack of vision and the different fields of work of the contributors makes its development spread all over the place. Unlike blender, it doesn’t seem like FreeCAD will achieve a breakthrough milestone.
It is either an extortion from your domain registrar or sometimes opportunistic domain squatters taking over your domain for a year or two. Check for how long it was registered a put a reminder to get it back
I know. I was talking about making it default. As many newcomers won’t know about it’s existence first hand, and give up on it
Yes some call it tabbed menu. Others call it ribbon menu. It should be the default as many users nowadays are used to this UX paradigm
Why libre office hasn’t adopted the tabbed many bar yet is beyond me ! They are probably not gonna be sued by Microsoft. It is just a huge ux improvement and would ease the friction for new comers especially that everyone is used to using tabbed bar on every other software.
If you need to use software professionally or in a commercial product, then go commercial.
I have been trying to switch to using more open source lately. And I couldn’t notice how more than 90% of projects I Land on are abandonware . and the rest are so slowly moving you shouldn’t rely on the for anything where security matters.
Stick with Foss projects that have a non profit behind then or a strong community of devs behind them. With a leat dozens of commits a month.
Surprised a boring platform like LinkedIn has that many users.
I was hyped for it coming before the end of this year. Anyways its great the project isn’t dead
Eternity, hands down the best,
open source = no ads or tracking
very cutomisable, smooth navigation, no major bugs. + supports older phones
Android studio is a very heavy peace of garbage! you need modern hardware to get somewhere.
There is one good example of a good FOSS project with reliable funding and a thriving community, which is blender.
You know why blender is a success unlike other projects . Because it a very complicated piece of software that most of the community can’t just fork or start another project. so for FOSS projects to thrive they need more convergence of developpers to the same project . rather than divergence of efforts into multiple of projects. I know that this is not how FOSS works. but the reality is that without an urge to devellop projects in rivalary with the commercial ones. the resulting quality will always be mediocre.
another problem is the lack of proper documentation, It it very hard and time consuming to get familiarised with complex project codes. many of them are lacking proper documentation to encouraged newer devs to join in. the reality is that this takes time away from coding into documentation, but its an important ressource to encourage growth and participtation.
thanks , I didn’t know about Clipious
I hear what you are saying.
but did you ever consider how github could be a stop gate to many many tech illeterate people, who don’t know how to post an issue or report a bug using github, having to sign-up to website they might never use again, figure up how to fill-in the ever so eleborate issue forms, and have to activate 2FA everytime they want to comment on the issue weeks after it has been posted. that’s why you see many project subreddits are full with bug reports and help requests. its easiers for the commons.
Git technology is def a godsend for developpers but could also be a barrier to less techy people how don’t know how to report, or if it is a problem in the software or something they are doing wrong. that’s why I think we need to be more welcoming and less standoffish to people with less know how.
Maybe having a simple form on the project website that can mirror the bug reports to github is oneway to provide people with an easier solution to give feedback that they might not give otherwise.
I get it, but my complaint wasn’t as much about project developpers as it is about the project fanbase.
I totally respect all the efforts involved into making open source software, my gripe was with how to communities do resist change or criticisme sometimes.
the problem is not the email per se, as I have 2 or 3, but having to open up my email and retrieve the 2auth code each time I sign-in to github to post an issue. my browser is set to autodelete cookies when closed. that’s my petpeev. and unfortunaly most projects are hosted on github.
but in the day it was easier to report an issue straight on the devs websites; very fast and straight forward. times changes
ry to fix it yourself and then submit a Pull Request.
most software users cannot code.
I try to post issues on github , but because I always have to verify my sign-up using email 2auth. It grinds my gears that reporting bugs is becoming tedious.
I tried to open an account on codeberg.org to report a small issue, the website refused to let me sign-up with a temporary email (I understand they have to fight spam), I don’t like using my own email everywhere so its another disappointement on my list.
There is a project called photogimp. Witch tries to copy PS ui and it keybindings. Wait until a stable release of gimp 3.0 and they will update their fork with this release.
